Residents of Back of the Yards got an early start on their grocery shopping during the grand opening of the new Wal-Mart store in the neighborhood.
The store is one of three Wal-Marts that opened in Chicago on Jan. 16. Two other stores opened in Lake View and Little Village.
Characterized as “Neighborhood Markets,” the stores are stocked with more than fresh produce—offering products ranging from pharmaceutical and beauty items to pet goods and hardware.
Each store has a pharmacy, bakery and deli.
Angelica Anguiano shopped at the Back of the Yards’ Wal-Mart store during its opening and said it was about time one opened in the neighborhood. Despite her excitement, she expressed concern over some of the troubles that could come from its opening.
“[Wal-Mart’s] low prices, could affect local businesses in the area,” she said.
Some local owners have also expressed concerns about the future of their businesses.
The three Neighborhood Markets will employ a total of 350 people. The Back of the Yards store alone will employ 125 people, according to a Wal-Mart spokesperson.
With the opening of the three new stores, Wal-Mart now counts with eight locations in Chicago. Two more Neighborhood Markets will open in 2014 in the neighborhoods of Auburn/Gresham and Grand Boulevard, while a Supercenter will open in Pullman later this year.

Los residentes de Back of the Yards tuvieron un temprano comienzo en sus compras durante la gran apertura de la nueva tienda Wal-Mart en el vecindario.
La tienda es una de tres Wal-Marts que abrieron en Chicago el 16 de enero. Dos tiendas más abrieron en Lake View y La Villita.
Caracterizadas como “Neighborhood Markets” o mercados de la comunidad, las tiendas cuentan con un gran inventario de frutas y verduras frescas—ofreciendo productos que van desde artículos farmacéuticos y de belleza a articulos para mascotas y de ferretería.
Cada tienda cuenta con una farmacia, panadería y deli.
Angélica Anguiano compró en la tienda Wal-Mart de Back of the Yards durante su apertura y dijo que ya era hora de que se abriera una en el vecindario. A pesar de su emoción, expresó preocupación por algunos de los problemas que podrían resultar a raíz de su apertura.
“Los precios bajos [de Wal-Mart], podrían afectar a los negocios locales”, dijo.
Otros dueños de negocios alrededor han expresando preocupacion por el futuro de sus negocios.
